Rainbow Granny Squares

  • Size H/8/5mm crochet hook or sized needed to obtain gauge.

4 sc= 1inche, 2dc rows = 1 inch

Instructions – Blanket – Center

Row 1 (RS): With white, ch 124 loosely, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (first 3 chs count as first dc), [sk next 3 chs, 3 dc in next ch] across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), [3 dc in next sp between dc groups] across, ending with dc in last st, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in sp before next dc group, [ 3 dc in next sp between dc groups] across, turn.

Rows 4-48: Rep rows 2 & 3 alternatively. At end of last row, do not fasten off.

Trim

Rnd 1: Ch 1, evenly sp sc around entire outer edge with 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: Join baby variegate with sc in any sc, ch 1, sc in each st around with 3 sc in each center corner st, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

Granny Square – Make 24.

Rnd 1: With baby variegated, ch 4, [2 dc, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 2) 3 times] in 4th ch from hook (first 3 chs count as first dc), join with sl st in top of beg ch-3.

Rnd 2: Sl st to ch-2 sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch sp, ch 1, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch sp, ch 1] around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3.

Rnd 3: Sl st to ch-2 sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Rnd 4: Join white with sl st in any corner ch sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch sp, [ch 1, 3dc in next ch-1 sp] twice, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, [3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1] twice, rep from * around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in each st and in each ch-1 sp around with 2 sc in each corner ch-2 sp, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

Joining

  1. With baby variegated, hold 2 Squares WS tog and, working in black lps, join with sc in 2nd sc of corner, sc in each st across, ending with sl st in first sc of next corner. Fasten off.
  2. Join 5 Squares tog for each side of Blanket and 7 Squares each for the top and bottom.
  3. Starting with side strips first (5 Granny Squares), with WS tog, working in back lps only, crochet Granny Squares to side edge of Center.
  4. After both sides are joined to Center join top and bottom (7 Granny Squares) strips in same manner.

Edging

Rnd 1: Join baby variegated with sc in any st, sc in each st around, with 1 dc in each seam and 2 sc in eahc corner, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: Join white with sc in any st, ch 2, dc in same st, sk next stm [(sc ch 2, dc) in next st, sk next st] around, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

  • Sport weight yarn ( 5 oz/ 455 yds/ 140 g per skeins): 14 oz. pale blue.
  • Size F/5 /3.75 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • White sewing thread
  • 4 (3/8-inch) pale blue buttons
  • 6 yds 1/4-inch-wide white satin ribbon

Gauge

5 sc= 1 inch; 3 cross-sts = 1 inch; 2 cross-st rows and 1 sc row = 1 inch

Pattern notes

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join rounds with a slip stitch unless otherwise stated.

Special Stitch

Cross-stitch (cross-st): Sk next st, dc in next st, working behin dc just made, dc in sk st.

Blanket

Row 1: Ch 149, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (148 sc)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc throughout), [cross-st over next 2 sts] 73 times, dc in last st, turn. (1 dc, 73 cross-sts, 1dc]

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (148 sc)

Row 4-101: [Rep rows 2 & 3] 49 times. At the end of row 101, do not turn.

Border:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in end of row 101, 2 [sc in end of dc row, sc in end of sc row] across edge, working 3 sc in corner st, sc in each ch across opposite side of foundation ch, working 3 sc in corner st, [sc in end of sc row, 2 sc in end of next dc row] across edge, working 3 sc in corner st, sc in each st across row 101, working 2 sc in same sc as beg ch-1, join in beg sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in each st around, working 3 dc in each center corner sc, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.

Rnd 3: [Ch 3, sl st in first ch of ch-3, sl st in each of next 2 dc] around, ending with last sl st in base of beg ch-3, fasten off.

Ribbon Trim

For long edges of blanket, cut 2 lengths of ribbon each 56 inches long. For top and bottom of blanket, cut rem length of ribbon into 2 lengths each 52 inches long.

Weave 56-inch-length ribbon up edge of blanket over and under rows, between first dc and  first set of cross-sts on each edge.

Weave 52-inch-length of ribbon over and under first and last row of cross-sts at top and bottom.

Position ends of ribbon evenly at each corner. At each corner, fold ends under to form 2 lps. Working through all thicknesses, sew a button to the center of lps. Rep in each corner.
